Commenting On My Blog

I am new enough to this blogging thing to get a frission of excitement everytime I get a new comment. I was a well-loved child, I was breast fed, and I don't have confidence issues... but I was nervous about posting on the www and every comment is validation for choosing to blog.

The question is, what is the correct ettiquette? I get an email for every comment and read every single one (that's just good manners), but do I reply to every one?

At the moment I want to, but then I'd turn the comment section into another blog - and that's what this page is for, the comments section is for other people to have their say. Any advice/criticsm in the form of comments is welcomed.

I've also turned off the option to moderate everybody's comment before it's posted. Let's see if that works.

Most of all please keep reading and commenting!

Thanks

What-ho. You don't have to comment on every one. You don't have to reply to any of them at all. You've been added to my blogroll simply because I like reading about a UK LEO who appears to be interested in old-fashioned crap like, you know, making thing better and helping people. It's just nice to read the day-to-day of someone who's wearing the uniform, but also has a functioning brain.

You don't have to reply to any of us. Just ... do. Reply if someone says something you feel you have something to say to - or don't.

There aren't any rules. Welcome outside.

But please - do keep writing. I shall try to bury prior experience, and pretend that other UK LEOs are equipped with a brain an a conscience if you keep sharing.

Yours,

Stuck Somewhere In Berkshire

i second mark, reply or not as you see fit, it's your blog to do with as you please. while i am not and have never been a police officer in my former trade i relied on the police to come a-running if i had to earn my pay, shooting back at a do it yourself socialist. thankfully it never came to that but now that i am retired, with my gunbelt hung on the wall, i still take a friendly interest in what the police do and how they do it.

Most commenters do not expect a reply. Just appreciate the chance to comment on the main blog and, maybe, raise a few comments from others.

I think you have a first-class blog. I honestly believe that it will be enhanced still further with your added comments. Can I be so presumptuous as to ask you to look at the comments section in http://g-man-mrknowitall.blogspot.com
I think that would be a good role-model for this blog.
Cheers.

Please be ready to switch your control over the Comments back on. Comment is one thing, and even adverse views can be important, if put in a sensible manner. But lame-brained, foul abuse of your site is quite another. Don't let yourself become associated with ranting you have absolutely no sympathy with.

Sometimes I cant help myself and feel I must comment. But I try to allow others to debate the subject if possible. Early on I found I was commenting more than anyone.
I am just glad to see you don't have the dreaded verification thing on!!

Stay as you are. No apologies necessary.

LawDog put me onto your blog and I see that another favorite read, Ambulance Driver, is also on your list.

In reference to your previous post, I had to look up "numpty." Sheesh! What a put down. According to my Mac's dictionary it refers to a stupid or ineffectual person.

PS: Another interesting and intelligent writer, though not a LEO, is BadTux the Snarky Penguin http://www.badtux.net/

I'm new-ish to reading blogs. But in my llimited experiance you appear to be getting it spot on.
Have added you to my favourites.... so give me loads to read!
And you can ignore me if you like..... Never has shut me up before!

Likewise, I back up what anon said, you may end up wanting to control what is put. It's all very well letting people comment, but debate is one thing, maniacs who just want to post mindless abuse and cannot hold up a debate on a subject without becomging abusive are another. It can be fun replying and making them look stupid, but generally they're pretty good at doing that without external help, hence the phrase, 'Don't feed the trolls!'.

You've already shown wit and charm in your writing - so keep it up!!!
Only things is, as a civilian (yes I know I said a bad word), who only has an interest in the Police as a "customer/consumer", please keep the jargon and abbreviations to a minimum if you can - or give a short explanation of what it means.
Us civvies will appreciate your blog better.
Stay safe.

As TUPC said, its your blog do whatever the f**k you want!!! You've had some cracking posts on there and you quite clearly have taken the time to consider what you have put down. If people want to post then so be it, not everyone posts on every blog they read and you shouldn't feel obliged to respond anyway, just let the counter on the front page do all the talking, if people like it they'll keep reading, if they don't who cares - its your blog!!

Switching moderation off is fine if you want visitation by Trolls like Snoopy or the abuse of responsible free speech demonstrated by 'Cuddles'

A brief word on moderation:

I'm for it. If someone's making a mess on your blog, you've every right to wipe it off. You can turn it into a round-table bull-session, you can ban the poster (or serially nuke his posts) or whatever you feel like.

blog away and moderate when necessary. Abuse in the absence of any meaningful discussion is pathetic but, luckily, comes from a pretty narrow band of minds. At the end of the day, its your choice to delete them or let them ride. Don't let it spoil an otherwise worthwhile cause.

I'd love to turn the moderate thing off. But sadly being the internet some people just have to tell the world how clever they are by just being a pain in the ass.

Dunno about the etiquitte of replying to comments. I suppose if someone raises a point you want to discuss further then by all means...

You keep posting em, I'll keep reading em.

It looks to me as if you're off to a rousing start, with a good group of folks stopping by. About the trade talk abbrevations, I'm fairly well up with our American police slang and even a few of the more common British things, but perhaps you might want to do a quick and dirty glossary for the civilians in the audience.

I'm just wondering when our friend Cuddles will join us...
